Hi everyone. Quick question.

I'm putting together a family tree for a project [livejournal.com profile] sempraseverus and I are working on, and I'd like to use a program to make it neater. Does anyone know of a good, free family tree generator program that I could use? Geni is so damn aggravating, but I don't know anything else.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Back in November my fanfiction reached the point where Sev and the people he's with arrive at one of the other character's "old homestead"...

The situation is that it's September 1969, and many extended family members are there, refugees from Hurricane Camille.

And we're talking a LOT of relatives, ranging in age from newborn to 60s and 70s. So I needed help to keep them all defined, especially their relationship to each other.

So I searched the internet for freebie genealogy programs.

Don't know how what I found stacks up to programs that you buy, but I really like the program that's available from http://www.myheritage.com

That program provides some really neat reports. There's also a program from http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com , it's okay, but I prefer the MyHeritage program.

Both programs have "deluxe" versions you can buy, but like I said they have freebie versions which at least give you the "try before you buy" option.

Ok - either my computer or my LJ is acting up weird! I don't know what kind of wacky comment form I did earlier, but after I ticked off all the appropriate boxes it posted then deleted my post! I thought LJ must have updated their site or something. So, anyway, I came back to tell you that the free genealogy site I was told about IS Family Echo, and ack! my post was gone - my LJ says there was an error...SOOOO, I am going to repost! I use Tribalpages online...it has several different types of trees and I have Family Tree Maker on my laptop. Sorry about that! I am thinking it might be time to get a new computer...last week I sent a chapter to my beta and Word Pad erased every few sentences...talk about confusing.
Do you need something specific, like a decendency chart because I have a bunch of those in hard copy.

I agree with majorjune. I have on my computer MyHeritage family tree builder and let me tell you, it works. It's fairly simple to use, and you can add as many people you'd like. You can also export the family tree in a .pdf format and print it, you can put extra info in, like date of birth, marriage, death, occupation, life story, whatever. You can also add photos.

I've done my family tree and I have almost 300 people in it (I think I have 7 generations so far) and I printed it and glued it on the wall. My dad didn't even know what I was doing until he saw it, and he was pleasantly surprised (after all, we do live out of our homeland and we don't know all members of our family).
