Finally! A day off. This has been a tough week, and next week's schedule is looking pretty hairy. Hey, it's work, it's money, and those are good things.

Per [livejournal.com profile] stgulik's suggestion, I've been watching Sense8. It's very elaborate and stylish and compelling watching, but after about 8 episodes I still couldn't put hand to heart and tell you I truly know what's going on. Still, it's fun to watch for the soft-core pron and sexy actors. After I complete the series I'm going to need to sit down with Jules and ask a lot of questions.

We had a great time with our friend BC last night. He came over and recorded a podcast with us, in which we broke our taboo about talking about religion. Even with that, we had a very fun time and didn't say goodnight until after 2am. We are both a bit flat and out of sorts this morning - just tired and burned out, I guess.

I managed to stumble upon a terrific deal at one of our local thrift stores on Friday. We finished work in time to treat ourselves to lunch, and stopped by a relatively new thrift store next door to our favourite Indian restaurant. I found a couple of really nice wooden candlesticks, as well as a brass candlestick that is hollowed out through the middle - I'm thinking I'll do another 'hand lamp' like this one:

Did I mention I saw one of these on Etsy that was smaller than this and they were charging over $300 for it? I'm in the wrong line of work.

While we were there, I also spotted a really nice pair of pillows with leather covers. The leather was in super shape, and when I unzipped one to make sure it was genuine leather, I saw the Pottery Barn label. When we got home we looked them up - new the covers ALONE cost $129.50 each!!!! Look what I paid for them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Judging from the tag, they had just put them out that day (8-21), so I really lucked out. The photo doesn't show it, but the leather is in superb shape. I must be cashing in all my thrift store karma lately - I've had some excellent results. Last week I found a brand new coffee/food grinder for $1 and a gorgeously ornate brass candlestick (about 18 inches tall) for $4.

There's something about thrifting that I find exciting. Maybe it's the thrill of the hunt. Or maybe because it feels very much like proof (to me, anyway) that some muse or The Universe, or whatever is putting stuff in my path that I need or that will delight me. In any case, I scored this weekend at garage saling by happening upon a sale given by a guy who had the same taste in movies and books that I do. Came away with a huge box filled with dvds and books for ten bucks. Since he had Fringe, Lost, Lord of the Rings, lots of Stephen King, and classic horror movies, I figured that anything he had that I hadn't already watched/read would be a match for my taste as well.

It's a good thing that I do so well garage saling; the thrift shops around here are crap compared to yours. My theory is that people would rather sell any of the upscale items they have at a garage sale and recoup some money rather than just donate it. Or maybe they're just keeping their stuff? Nah.... everywhere I look, people are talking about de-cluttering and down-sizing, so they must be doing something with their old stuff. One of my favorite consignment shops closed this week (She carried couture items at a fraction of the price!). She wanted to move to Atlanta to be close to her daughter. Ah, well... hopefully the other upscale consignment shop in this area will have twice as much stuff now.

Talk to me before you go on. I'll try to give you non-spoiler explanations. Understand there's stuff nobody knows yet about the larger story line. This is all sort of their "origin story."

If you're not enjoying it, don't feel you have to finish it!

Please don't get me wrong - it's compelling and I am definitely interested in what I'm seeing, I just wanted affirmation that I'm not too dense to get it. I feel a lot better knowing that I'm not the only one in the dark - I would have felt a lot more discouraged if you'd said, "What, you didn't realise that X means Y and A is B?"

Perhaps you could do some repurposing and selling on the side?

I think I might have to make one of those for my bedroom.

I'm waaaaay too lazy to browse through a thrift shop. I just want to get in and get out. But, your awesome finds make me want to reconsider.

So about sense8 ... I was intrigued by the preview, but never watched it. How many episodes are there? I'm not really a TV/movie watcher, but sometimes when I find a really good series, I'm glad I've watched.

Around 12 or 13 episodes, I think. It's intriguing, but I still have a lot of questions. I'm not that smart, actually, so these things don't come to me easily.

Not that smart, lol. Well, let's keep in mind that there are many different types of smart, and nobody has them all. If your weakness is that you are dumb in the understanding-complicated-television show-plot lines realm, I think you'll be fine. :). If I decide to watch, I'll let you know if I share your affliction.

Whoa! Hey, can you rub my head so I can get a wee of your thrift store karma? XD
