As I mentioned in one of my SteamLib posts, we really lucked out in procuring an antique desk chair a couple of months back. We only paid $55 for it, and after a good drink of wood food, it really came to life. In fact, I'm sitting in it even as I type.

It's still a bit creaky and could benefit from a couple of squirts of WD40, but all in all it's doing well.

The other day, for S&Gs I looked through Craigslist, and found this one:

The seller, a super-nice gentleman named Joe, was asking $25 for it! I called and said, "I'll take it!"  It was only then that I found out that Joe lived in Virgilina, NC. About 5 hours away from us.

Knowing TheHubs™ would rather drive than eat, I turned to him and said, "Would you be willing to drive 5 hours to pick up a chair?" Of course he said yes. We are now the proud owners of a second antique desk chair. Tomorrow we start feeding it - it's as dry as the other one, but these chairs sell on average around $300 on ebay, so the $35 we spent in gas was more than compensated, I think.

Since we were only 17 miles from the Virginia border, we decided to roam about a little. We ended up in Clarksville, VA, in the middle of this huge street festival, where we immediately got penned in against the lake and had to nagivate back outside town. We then ran into a terrible afternoon thunder storm, ate at a very expensive but delicious restaurant in Chapel Hill, then made our way home. It was a fun day, just driving and listening to music at full volume.

Our friend Evan, who got us started on the Podcasts, is going to be our first guest on Episode 4, and we have tomorrow and Monday to tidy up before he comes over. By then, I hope to have the chair well fed, the curtain hemmed and hung, and the rest of the prints on the walls. Not to mention tidying up the house.

And to massage my inner child, I purchased these yesterday:

Severus sits on the left side of my desk, Jon on the right - gotta love these dark-haired, dark-eyed sulky men. I had hoped to purchase Hermione, but they were out at the only place in town I could find the little darlings - Hot Topic. I'll have to have a look around on ebay to find Hermione. I'm not that interested in getting the entire HP set, but I would like to have my OTP.

I wanna Snape!

That's awesome about the chair. And it sounds like you had a good time, I'm glad! You're much better at finding deals than I am.

I think you can order at hot topic online and pick up at your local store. Wouldn't hurt to ask.

The drive with The Hubs alone seems like a great way to spend the day -- the chair is just gravy! Paul and I used to go on trips like that. One day, we decided that we wanted to try to drive to West Virginia. We never made it that far, but we had a great time driving around Maryland. Stopped at a small private zoo, where an ostrich somehow took a liking to me and followed me around, making goo-goo eyes. Saw the Conowingo Dam. I saw a Loch Raven on the map, so we had to find that. Had an overpriced and mediocre lunch at a restaurant overlooking the lake. We ended up in a little one-horse town that was cut in half by the Pennsylvania/Maryland state line. Had a drink in it's one and only dive bar and decided to head home instead of driving on. By then, I was starting to feel a little antsy, so Paul took over the driving. Had dinner back in Delaware at a Spanish tapas restaurant. All in all, it was a relaxing, memorable day that I will always treasure. We never seem to do stuff like that anymore, for a variety of reasons.

One of the nicest aspects of antique shopping is the story that goes along with the find. You'll always get to remember a happy day and a great road trip when you talk about that chair.

Hooray for a happy find on Craigslist! I love days like that, where you just get in the car with one goal in mind, but it turns into a whole day of awesomeness.

I saw a Hermione at Amazon for about $10, so we know she's out there. (I should get them for myself.)

What a fun road trip!!! And well worth the drive, I'd say. The chair is going to be gorgeous!

The figurines are head-expodingly cute. I've been longingly eyeing Tywin Lannister myself...

Oh, I want that Severus!

And what a great find in the chair.

Where did you eat in Chapel Hill? I love that town.
