SED - Day 12 - A Bit of A Dull Day
May. 12th, 2015 06:44 pmI hope I will be forgiven for writing a rather dull something for today. I haven't honestly done much today but work and tidying up. I'm preparing to brave the elements and assist TheHubs™ tackle the jungle that is our front and back lawn. It is humiliatingly overgrown, especially the back. I dread it, but it's got to be done. Tomorrow we're going over to Mom's to do her lawn and tidy up her house. She hates to admit it, but she needs a little help. She was going to hire someone, and I told her we would do it. She is so proud; she would rather pay strangers than to ask for help from her family. Stubborn and proud.
We used Watko Rejuvinating oil on the chair - it soaked it up like a sponge. Three times. I think we'll just keep 'feeding' it until it does what the directions say it should do, which is sit on top of the wood. It's turning a lovely deep colour. TheHubs™ looked it up - the seller gave us the fragments of the maker's label. I found it quite interesting to read about the history of the company. It was manufactured i by the Highpoint Bending & Chair Furniture company of Siler City, North Carolina n the '30's, 40's or early 50's - we know that because the Furniture company changed their name to the Boling Chair company in 1956. They started out making parts for horse-drawn vehicles at 1901, but they started making office furniture a couple of years later. I don't know why there are so many quality furniture manufacturers in North Carolina; perhaps the wood is of a superior quality, I don't know. But there are tons of them, and apparently this one was quite well-respected. The Boling Company closed business sometime after 1987, but I'm not sure which year.
Apparently they were known for their very well-made chairs and don't come up for sale often because people keep them. Ours shows signs of early repairs and some joints have separated slightly (they are tight as can be - and all the joints are solid as a rock), We saw them on ebay for $350 - $400, so we feel pretty good for getting it for $55. I hope we can find something similar, but lightning usually doesn't strike twice. A similar one would be great, though.
Our printer bit the dust yesterday; TheHubs™' watch broke today, my oven's thermostat is out of whack and overcooks one day and takes twice as long to cook the next. It's one of those weeks where things are just not going the way I'd like, but that's the way things go. The absolute mess that is our house is starting to get to me a little; I'm ready to retreat to our little haven of a library, but that's a while in the future - at least until the bookshelves are made. But we are healthy and the cats haven't killed one another yet. There's food in the pantry and the house doesn't appear to be about to fall apart on us. The car still has A/C, and we can get the bills paid. Things can be very much worse.
I feel so sad I won't be at MISTI, but because I'm not on Facebook now, I don't see the real hum of activity. I am going to miss all my friends so much. I was just blown away two years ago with the incredible love and friendships I made. It was such a powerful thing. I felt like a rock star there, surrounded by all my idols. I was such a fangirl there, I tell you. I told myself I would be cool but I was just as giddy as you'd expect.
Is anyone going to participate in
hpcon_envy this year? I feel really crap that I haven't written anything lately. I feel like I should be writing, but between working on the house and trying to send out query letters I just don't seem to be very prolific right now. I need to start the final edit on Book Two next; but my creativity feels a little thin right now. I think worrying about finding an agent is shortcircuiting my link to the Muse. I would like to do something for con_envy if it's going to happen, though. I always have.
Well, it's almost 7pm, so I can't put off the inevitiable. I dread gonig out in the waning heat and tackle that jungle. I'm embarrassed at just how tall the weeds are right now.
Hugs to everyone!

Date: 2015-05-13 12:09 pm (UTC)But I really do want you to have fun. Just remember, there are so many of us who love your work, and care for you. And you are a huge part of the reason I'm so gutted because I can't go.
