Apparently, a site called http://fanfic-journal.com/ has been reposting LiveJournal posts without that person's permission, and someone told me mine was one of them. I have filed a complaint, as I was encouraged to do, but what can I do to prevent this in future? To be honest, there are only three of my posts on the site, and they all have the 'fanfiction' tag, so it must automatically grab anything that has that tag. It's frickin' creepy. Would flocking all my posts prevent it?

Back when I had a blog on Typepad, a bunch of us discovered many of our blog posts were mirrored on a site like this. If you'd once mentioned Paris Hilton, for instance, your post would appear in chron order along with a lot of other people's posts. We looked into it, but decided there was nothing we could do after complaining to the webmaster (if there was one) and the domain provider. The internet is still the wild, wild west, and sometimes we have to either ride hard or head home.

They apparently fish for tags that read fanfic, fanfiction or other derivatives of the same. I don't use those tags, so nothing of mine is over there. Sad part is, if people have regular posts that aren't locked that have the tags, they end up over there as well as their stories - at least until the dweb vets their haul and deletes them, which isn't consistent. ::sighs::

Hey! We could start a campaign to have everyone post dummy posts with the fanfic tag and flood the blog...

I looked over there and it would appear that the person who is doing this is not even reading the posts. I'll bet that if you tag this post with fanfic it will probably show up there as well. Yeah, I would lockdown all LJ posts if it's not for public consumption.

I wouldn't f-lock my posts; I mean, isn't the whole idea to get more readers of your work, not fewer? It seems simple enough. Don't use fanfiction as a tag! Maybe use "stories" instead.

I think the problemm with this is the lack of control. On your own journl/blog you have the option to hide, restrict or delete an entry, and even on any well run Com you can ask for, say a gift post, to be left up anonymously. It isn't as if this is a hard-copy publication with all the usual caveats, after all.

There was a bit of a problem with an archive a good few years back, where someone who became co-owner started doing odd things and in the end (after a few upsets) started a new archive - and simply copied across a lot of the stories without permission or notification.

He then either refused to acknowlege or gave some half-arsed excuse about problems with the new coding or whatever when authors that had been hijacked tried to contact him, and we had no way to alter, repair or delete our work. Nor did we get notifications about reviews or anything.

I did not know about this. This sucks. Although when I visit the site, the very first (obviously harvested) post did make me laugh:

Sadly, they removed this one... but others are still there.

Yeah, WTF? They even had a post of mine that was not fanfic -- just a random entry from my LJ. As someone said about, they just search for tags; they don't even read the entries. I though about removing my "fanfic" tag, but I'm not sure it's worth it.
