Well, folks, a week later, and our floor is done. It wasn't easy, and we could not have done it without the help and guidance of my dear cousin Jimmy, who put in a full day as a BellSouth Lineman in the SC swelter, came straight to our house and put in another four hours each day. The combination of an uneven floor, reclaimed boards and our own lack of experience meant it took twice as long to do everything, but in the end, I think it's worth it, and it sure reminds me that family is love:

Cousin Jimmy is a treasure, and your new floors are gorgeous. My word. And the lovely kitty. . .

Seriously, you've got me ready to rip up my own beige carpeting and get busy.

Oh now that's just lovely! I wish my floors were level/smooth enough to do that. I have seriously warped hardwood floors.

One day, when we win the lottery, the floors will have to be ripped out down to the sub-flooring (and probably some of those, too) and be put down again. But that will be after we lift the house and put in a new foundation. At least my roof doesn't leak.

This whole house ownership thing never ends, does it?

That's the truth, although to be fair, we sort of neglected our house in favour of our shop, so while we ran the shop for 2-1/2 years the house sort of had to fend for itself. Now that we can devote our time to it, hopefully it will start to bloom again.

It was a new house, but the cement slab was laid during the drought, which was followed by two wet years, so we have serious subsidence.

I should have mentioned that this is the famous Severus Snape - or Sevvie, as the Hubs insists he is called. Lovely fellow - very sweet, very gorgeous and a pain in the arse.

Oooo, that looks lovely! And a floor is so much less work than a carpet (once you get the damned thing laid, that is!) Yay for cousin Jimmy!

I am soooo thrilled to be shed of that horrific carpet - it was disgusting - and this is much nicer all round!

He actually is terribly handsome (one of the good looking teddys in the family). The lovely cat is Severus Snape, AKA Sevvie by the Hubs.

I LOVE hardwood floors and those are GORGEOUS, especially set in front of the fireplace. Love the lampshades too...I have those on wrought iron lamps on my headboard. Y'all did a fab job! Give that cousin of yours some PepsiCola (all one word)...that is what my aunt rewarded us with when we did chores for her. If it was super hot out, we got vanilla ice cream in the PepsiCola! YUM!

Whew - a PepsiCola sounds pretty good about now - it's still dang hot....

He really is - such a lovely person, handsome to boot, and did it with a smile on his face. We're trying to come up with something really nice for him and his wife. We're thinking either a gift basket or a gift card to a favourite restaurant.

Thank you very much, ma'am! lol

It was not as easy as it should have been, but the results have been worth the two weeks spent with the house upside down.

It looks absolutely divine, Teddy! I hate most carpet with a purple passion... no matter how many times I might vaccum, I'm still left with a subtle, icky, dirty feeling... weird, I guess, but true. I plan on 90% wood flooring when we build a new place one day... great job, and thank heavens for family members that are actually handy!

Believe me, Bullet, there was nothing subtle about just how icky and gross our carpet was. Between the Hubs and me (not the two most graceful people on the planet) spilling stuff all over it, the three cats throwing up (and worse) over it, our carpet was the most disgusting thing on the planet - and we'd only had it three years.

I had hoped we'd have enough left over to do our bedroom but alas, no. We had just enough to do the front room and foyer, and then we had to really go through each board and make sure they were usable. Many were not.

But I agree, wood floors over carpet anyday, and once we had the know-how and the proper tools (which was THE most important factor of all) I was and remain thrilled over it.

Ooooh!! I love it! I want to do this to the floors in my house. Britt and I have been talking about it for quite a while, but have never had the money for it. But hopefully now that I have a job, we can do it soon.

It looks so good! I'm jealous.

I tell you, it was no picnic. Two solid weeks of having to walk sideways because every spare part of our home was crammed with furniture, including the kitchen, the hall to the writing room, the bedroom and the front door. I was seriously miserable, but finally we are getting back to normal and now sweating over job hunting. Keep fingers crossed!

I don't doubt it was a huge pain in the butt to do and deal with. My dad put in laminate flooring in their house while I was still living there and it really sucked. But he knew what he was doing, so it didn't take too long to finish.

I have complete faith that you will find a good job. If I can do it, you most definitely can!
