Just to update, I think I gave the wrong vibe about this entry. I wasn't complaining about it, but I just thought it was funny and wanted to share it. Sometimes I wish I had a 'joke' button on my keyboard! I really meant it that I thought it was a great compliment, but that I found the wording of it amusing. Sorry if I gave the wrong impression! Who doesn't want to be called a god (or in my case, goddess, but you know what I mean)?

I just received a review from ff.net for The Sensual World that said:

This is the first time I've been totally satisfied with a first chapter. Either your beta is outrageously incredible, or you yourself are a god.

Well, I do have a great beta, and sure enough, she does make me sound better, but.... why does it have to be either or?

On the good side, I just watched the entire series of Game of Thrones in two sittings. How much fun was that?

It's funny I didn't read this as either/or. I read it as a huge compliment to both of you. That's certainly the way I'd look at it.

I didn't really take it as an insult - I just thought it was a bit funny that it sort of sounded like 'either you're great or your beta is making you look that way!'

And in all reality, Jules does make me look really good. My grammatical skills can be all over the place, and she is brilliant and taking a sentence I've put in paragraph A and putting it in paragraph B and making the whole thing read better.

I like to think of it as I'm the one who manufactured the car, and Jules in the one who shines it up, makes sure the chrome is gleaming and all the bells and whistles are happenning.

That's a great analogy, Teddy. Naturally, Sensual World is as good as it is because of your amazing talent at creating and giving voice to such a dramatic story. I agree with Mimi that the commenter was probably just trying to compliment you but botched it a bit. It could have been worse!

Most people misspeak or phrase things badly. Take it as the compliment it was MEANT to be, even if it was phrased awkwardly.

Okay, maybe not a god, per se. Just a writer who got VERY lucky with an unbeta-d first chapter.

I deleted what I said at first but not before you saw it. Drat. I wanted to go back and check my notes, and I was right the first time - Chapters 1 & 2 of SW were unbeta'd. After we met, you assigned me Chapter 3 onwards, as well as (I think) Chapter 16 of LML.

Well, there you go! Of course, it would have been better if you had beta'd it, and don't get me started about LML. I did have betas working on several of the earlier chapters, but I think the first 10 or so were unbeta'd...

I can't wait to see what you are going to do with Morning Falls...my favourite child, all polished up and shining!

Oh, yeah, right!!! Do you know how nervous I get when I send you a new chapter? How I worry that you are going to read through it and say, "Yep, this is crap why did I ever agree to beta this loser's stuff she can't write her way out of a paper bag etc etc etc" ???

You should never feel pressured about beta-ing my writing. You are the one I work so hard to please, because if it's no good to you, then I'm sunk!!
