Poor Hubs. We start his birthday off with our huge flat screen TV dying. Completely. Three months out of warranty. Which we bought from a store that went out of business two years ago. *sigh* Apparently this is an ongoing problem with Panasonic TVs (which came with the highest recommendation when we bought it), and it will cost almost as much to repair it as it would to buy a new one.
In the grand scheme of things, not a disaster by any means. An Mum has one we can use.
I just hate it happened on the Hub's birthday. I just wanted him to have a good one.

Date: 2011-06-21 04:06 pm (UTC)Got my first Samsung TV back in the early 80s, it lasted almost 20 years and only died when I had a power surge (and yes, it was plugged into a surge protector, but there you go).
So then I got a little Samsung portable, THAT lasted me until two years ago when the sound went on it (picture was still excellent, I used it as my monitor for when I had a WebTV account)>
I bought a Samsung HD flatscreen last year just before moving into the place I just moved from -- got it on sale from one of the shopping channels, it's a 32-inch that was on sale for $300-something and they had it on installments, so it was only a hundred-something for three months to pay it off. It's given me excellent service so far.

Date: 2011-06-22 01:21 am (UTC)I'd consider getting a floor display model if the price is really good and the store's willing to offer a decent guarantee on the inner working parts.
My TV is basically on 24/7 because since my teens I can't sleep in total silence, I need either music or white noise on in the background. So at night I have it tuned to either one of the New Age or classical music channels on my DishTV system.
And I've had it since April 2010, and it's still going strong; so just because the floor model may have been turned on all day for a couple of months doesn't necessarily mean that the "tube" (yeah, no actual tubes nowadays) or any other electronic part won't have years of service still in it.
Anyhoo, the Fourth of July sales are coming soon, so we might find a bargain there.
Not sure if TVs are the big thing for July 4th sales -- Fathers Day, yes, and I've seen big sales in August aimed at college students going away to school...
