The Long Night

There is great sadness in my family tonight. My cousin Candace, who is around seven years younger than me, was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer around August. She was determined to beat it, and braved some aggressive treatments. She wanted to see her grandchildren grow up, she said, and she wanted to fight.
In the past two months, it showed up everywhere, liver, lungs, bones, brain. Last week she started having trouble walking. The doctors found the cancer had destroyed her hip. She again tried to fight it with aggressive treatments. She was unable to walk. Moving her from one bed to the other resulted in screaming agony. Her mom, my cousin Vickie, has barely left her side since her first treatments in September.
On Sunday, things had gotten so bad the doctors told Vickie Candi probably had around four months to live. Vickie was worried about telling Candi the truth. All Candi wanted was to spend Christmas at home.
Today, the entire family was called in. Her prognosis had deteriorated to seventy two hours.
She died four hours later. Fuck cancer.
