Aside from the Niffler in the bottle, the hands! The nose! It's practically perfect in every way.

It's from the new Illustrated HP & The Prisoner of Azkaban book. I think it will be on sale in October. I have the first two and they are worth the investment.

The ears are horrific. Other than that, it's acceptable.

Why does he look overweight, in his 50's and smiling? *sigh* I was really hoping for a thin, 32 year old looking Snape in that book to match his canon self. Oh well. :P

Everyone has an idea in their head. I remember one Potter-endorsed illustrator who portrayed Snape as bald with a beard. I guess everyone sees him in a different way.

Yeah, those were pretty much my thoughts. Plus his features are squished into the middle of his face, his eyes are droopy, and that ear is both ridiculous and anatomically incorrect. And while his hair should be greasy, I sincerely doubt it's supposed to drip. Also, he's not sallow here; he's ruddy.

The nose is excellent, though. Generally, this looks like an attempt to paint an early Renaissance-style portrait, where the features are a little stiff and somewhat out of proportion.

Also, his hands should be narrow-fingered, not crablike. It comes down to the fact that I'm not a huge fan of Kay's versions of the characters. There's something slightly grotesque or uncanny about them. Although, to be fair, there's a lot about this portrait that's interesting. Get rid of the ear flap, tone down the amount of pink in Snape's face (why the heck is his nose red?), slim down his body, and reduce the age lines. This is PoA, so he's only 33.

Sorry, I'm feeling cranky and nitpicky tonight, apparently.

anatomically incorrect.

Indeed, his ear is almost at the back of his head, not at all attached to the jawline. Makes him look like a hamster.

Sorry, I'm feeling cranky and nitpicky tonight, apparently.

No worries, I am too. I'm so tired of non-canon looking Snape and this one just reads to me as awful. Like a chubby cross between Rickman and a frog. I know it's a stylistic thing but his head looks weird and flattened with his eyes sliding off to the sides of his face. There's no intensity, no malice or energy about this portrait. He looks like a friendly, portly old man, things that should never be said about the character of Severus Snape.

Hehe, grouches unite! *fist bump*

Now that I'm looking at the large-scale picture, I notice the Lily-of-the-Valley in the bottom corner. I wonder if other objects on his desk are meant to be symbolic.

I'm sure they are (you just know he caught that niffler trying to nick something!). I like the way his finger is holding place in the book, and where people are complaining that he lacks this or that, I think it is a moment caught off guard. His clothing is gorgeous, as well as his nose.

Everyone has an idea in their head how he looks, and some capture him better than others, but all in all, I think this is great.

So, Nifflers are animals who hunt for gold. Could that a symbol for avarice? Avarice tightly bottled up in a little jar. Could symbolize a secret desire to find or steal something of great value? Scissors are also a symbol of cutting, cutting off, ending, etc. That's all I have.

It's a start!

I personally think he's smiling because he's contemplating stuffing Harry into that little bottle in his hand. I think there's a lot more slyness in that expression than others give credit.

Wow, hostile environment to leave a positive opinion, but I'm going to do it anyway. I love LOVE the outfit, the greasy hair (that actually DOES drip in canon) and the nose. He looks kind, so there must not be students around.

Thank you for sharing. Love it.

I agree with everything you say. I know what you're saying, though. I was a little surprised at the amount of negativity. I understand artists recognise artistic problems with it, but there is so much of it to love, in my humble opinion.

Sorry, didn't mean to ruffle feathers, I was just giving my honest opinion. I'll keep my mouth shut from now on. :/

No, don't be that way. No feathers were ruffled in the making of this post.

I meant that we all have an opinion on it. If I was suprised at the amount of negativity, that was my lookout. It doesn't mean I don't respect all opinions on it. There is a difference between saying, "I disagree with you" and "I think you're wrong".

We can all disagree. We all have our likes and dislikes. I don't want anyone to feel they can't give their opinion on this. What if we were in total agreement - what would be the difference in the responses?

It's all good, Kat. Your opinion is good. My opinion is good. It's all in perspective.
