Who opened last night as Dr. Watson in one of our local semi-pro theatres Center Stage South Carolina's production of Sherlock Holmes. Although I wasn't there (Mum and I are going tonight), my former chef was there and by all accounts it was a hit. This has been one of those typical little theatre productions with more drama off stage than on . Only last week they sacked the original Sherlock (he had bragged on being an Equity actor and was so awful that they had to get rid of him - he couldn't remember his lines), but the guy they got to replace him was a miracle worker, and The Hubs is loving every minute of it. I've even included a clip for your delectation:

He makes a lovely bumbling Dr W! He seems to have a talent for comedy.

He really does - he loves comedy, but I've also seen him in several dramas and he was great in those as well. He's a super actor. I'm dead proud of him. He is the quintessential cuddly British guy, and I love him to bits.

He's a natural - I think of myself as being ok and I love to be in plays, but he's got the real talent - he had the chance to attend a really good theatre school in England, but his Dad and Mom couldn't afford it, and never told him he'd been considered. It is something that bothers him to this day.

How wonderful he's having a chance, then, to use his natural talent and his love for acting in something so well suited to that talent. He was completely charming as Watson in this snippet of a scene.

Lost opportunities are so painful in retrospect. I know so many people who'd be bitter and spurn anything to do with the 'lost' art. Your hubs is certainly an exception to that rule.

How true! His father was like that. He too was a very good actor, and applied for RADA and got in, but his father wouldn't allow him to do it, and you know, back in those days, if your parents said no, well, that was it. He was very bitter, and always discouraged the Hubs and his brother and sisters, telling them they couldn't do this or that. They all loved their dad, but they all resent his narrow-minded negativity.

As the Hubs grew older, he let it go, because he enjoyed what he was doing and learned to live without it, but he still wishes he'd had the chance to do it professionally. I think he could have. In England, it's sort of easier to 'break in' to show business than it is here.

Oh, it is an awesome play - it flew by, and everything about it was so slick - lighting, sound, the steampunk set, the acting - I've seen West End shows in London that weren't this slick. I was so, soo, proud.
