It's been a great Maundy Thursday, which I know is a bit of an oxymoron in the ecumenical sense, but hey, I'm a simple little agnostic so what do I know?
But seriously, folks.
If you haven't staked your claim over at
sshg_promptfest, please go over there and pick a goody. There are still loads to choose from. While I got the prompt I wanted, there were still a couple of juicy ones I hope someone will pick up and run with.
A couple of months ago we swapped out my mother's old chandelier for a slightly better one (it was the chandelier installed when the house was built in 1966 and looked it), and planned to take it to the dump. I had the bright idea to do a Pinterest number on it and place it in the guest bedroom - you know, give it a lick of paint, put new globes on it, a la this:

Well, it needed new globes and the fitting was very narrow (1-5/8"), which meant our choices were limited, and I despised the ones currently on it, even though they are still availble now:
YUK.
TheHubs™ and I debated it, and in the end, we realised that for the price of buying new globes and paint (around $40), we could purchase a brand new ceiling fan and install it for the same price, which is what we did, or will do tomorrow. We purchased it today, so while the lighting won't be a trendy cool colour, it will at least look like part of the decor. I won't throw the old chandelier away. I can't bear to part with it in case we can do something creative with it, but I do like having a ceiling fan in that room. Now all our large rooms have them. They are such a boon in the summer, and the kids will be here right in the dead centre of next summer, so they'll need all the help they can get. I'll take before and afters to show the progress.
The room will be teal and red with orange and green accents. It sounds hideous, I know, but it works really well. We've also purchased a wood blind for the window, and some wall art, so things are coming together.
In other news, I told you I had been planning on doing something to my hair, and last week it had gotten so hideous I couldn't take it anymore. I called our friend Chris, who had only cut it about six weeks before, and I said to him, "Cut it off. All off. All the colour; I don't care if you have to shave my bloody head, get the colour out." I had let the colour grow out for almost six months, and it was gruesome. I told Stgulik it looked like rancid butter hanging off the ends of my hair.
He said, "Let's do it!" And he did. I think there was enough hair on the floor to create a mini-me when he was done. I haven't had my hair this short in about 15 years, and I haven't NOT had some color or another on it for around 35. When he was done, there was no more color on my hair.
Turns out, the front is completely grey; the back is black-brown, with a few flecks of grey. And it's SHORT. I mean, short short short. I love it. Even as he was cutting it, I could feel myself growing lighter and more carefree. Here I am, without makeup or too much sleep in very harsh light, in a ratty old shirt, but this is the true, naked me:

Yep, that's ALL the hair I have. It's great. I may never keep it long again. TheHubs™ loves it; later on we went shopping for the ceiling fan, and he kept running his hands through it. He was delighted as much as I was. My FB friends have been very, very lovely about it. I just fee like a new person.
Lots of good things, then. short hair, ceiling fan, and my preferred prompt. It's not a bad life.

Date: 2016-03-25 12:35 am (UTC)I love teal and red together. Are you all working on the guest bedroom now? If so, I trust you'll post pics of the work in progress??
Alas, I doubt you will ever regret the ceiling fan in lieu of the chandelier.

I think you'll prove me right. The problem was that I really wanted something that looked like the ones above (the 'candle' style) but I couldn't find a way to adapt the old ratty fixture. It's nowhere as glam as these. If it had been, I would have tried harder.
I will absolutely post photos - TheHubs™ kept saying all the way home he should have taken a before pic of my hair, but to tell the truth, I don't think he thought I would go through with it! ;)

Date: 2016-03-25 01:15 am (UTC)I agree that you really do need the candle style. Although I'm digging those orb/sphere ones, too.
I've been thinking about you and hoping you are sleeping (and waking) well.

Date: 2016-03-25 01:56 am (UTC)We are the world's worst about taking before and after pics. I am shocked that we took anywhen we redid the Steamlib.
Been thinking about you as well. I hope everything is going well with you ♥

Enjoy that ceiling fan!

Date: 2016-03-26 07:06 pm (UTC)Poor Hubs! He had to take the ceiling fan apart twice - once because it wasn't seated evenly and would wobble, then again because he misread the directions and didn't wire the light, and had to rewire it!

Date: 2016-03-26 06:57 pm (UTC)A tip: I bought my glasses online at Zenni Optical, and paid a fraction of what it usually costs. I have this crazy strong prescription (-9.00 in both eyes plus astigmatism), and specs usually cost the moon. Zenni's cost so little and I still got the thinnest lenses. Their frames start at about $7 or so and they have tons of colours and styles. TheHubs™ gets his specs from EyebuyDirect, and they are great for him because his prescription is a lot lower than mine, so he doesn't have to pay extras for thinner lenses etc. Both are very reliable.
