Spring Catharsis
Feb. 24th, 2014 03:33 pmWith the girls arriving in just over 4 weeks, we're really pulling out all the stops to make the house and hearth feel like A Really Nice Place. We went to the dump today with about 20 bags of garbage, backseat full of cardboard, two dead printers (we go through printers like sailors on shore leave), a broken office chair, and mountains of paper.
It is a glorious, spring-like day here in SC - temp is 69, not a cloud in the sky, the sun like a big gold coin blazing away up there. We still have some things to do, mostly tidying up, but it just feels good to get rid of stuff that's been sitting around forever, taking up space and doing nothing else whatsoever.
I did promise a few photos of the guest room, and while there are still things sitting on the bed and all isn't quite done, here are a few bits and bobs I can photograph. You'd never know that a month ago, I was unable to fully open the door because of all the crap on the floor and bed. Getting rid of it has been wonderful, and has inspired me to clear out a couple of closets that tend to become my hidden rooms when people are coming by. Looks like another trip to the dump may be forthcoming after those are cleared out!
The lime green adirondack rocker got a beachy-blue treatment. Don't ever believe paint when it says its one coat. That's utter bull feathers. Took me two and a bit coats to cover all the green, but I really am pleased with the results of this.

At the end of the bed is a modest little quilt rack, showing two quilt tops I made several years ago but never got around to finishing. I ought to do those one of these days - they aren't large at all. The one in front would be great for a baby quilt.

It's no secret that I love making cork boards, and I wanted to do one for the room. Unfortunately, I ran out of the really cool champagne corks and had to make do with regular ones. We found the shadow box frame at a thrift store for a couple of dollars - it had never been used, so I just painted it with the same paint as the rocker. I'm pretty pleased with it.

And finally, the famous wrong-way mirror. It's sat in our house for six years, shoved under the bed, because we thought it was supposed to sit square, and it looked so ugly square. When we decided we needed a mirror and couldn't really justify spending any money on a new one when we had a perfectly functioning one here, we decided to hang it. Lo and behold, we realised the hanging bracket was on the point, not the side, and when we turned it on it's point, it became a really nice-looking mirror. Sitting on the chest of drawers is a lovely ceramic dish given to me by
stgulik a couple of birthdays ago; it looks great in this room.
madeleone gave me the blue and yellow mason jar candles sitting in the basket on the right, which also match the room perfectly.
The mirror also goes well with the brushed nickel knobs. Strange how things work out. We hope to find a nice large print to go over the bed, and the room will pretty much be complete.
