Without going into all the dreary details of why I'm asking this question, do you think I should re-post on ff.net?

Maybe just a few of the T-rated fics.

I rarely read on ff.net. That said, maybe leave just enough up so you still have a profile pointing to places you do post. I know how disappointing it is to have a favorite story disappear, and don't wish that feeling on others. However, as long as you keep a mention there of where else you post, people can still find you easily.

I've gone with no for a couple of reasons. First was the inconsistent enforcement of their smut policy. I've read fics that were waaaaayyy more smutty that some of the ones they've pulled which makes me pretty suspicious as to whether certain people were targeted for some reason. And secondly is the way they've randomly decided to block FLAG with no negotiation. It's probably about ad revenue and I'd actually have more respect for them if they just came out and admitted it.
On the other hand, if you do it, you might get new readers.

The stories that got pulled were due to a group of mean people with no life, not the site itself. Even if it violates their TOS they dont really have staff monitoring stuff. But it was a group who makes it their missions to have fics pulled. And the flag thingy, people were plagiarizing stories so that's why they disabled it. Just last week someone reposted LOTM's fic and we all gathered and got the author to pull that fic down.

Yeah, but blocking flagfic won't stop people from plagiarising. No-one is stupid enough to think that someone who wants to plagiarise a fic will try to rip it with flag, fail, and then go, well I guess I better not then. I can think of at least three other ways to pull a fic off the top of my head (eg save the web page and open it in a doc program, pull it from the HTML or use calibre plugins) and I'm sure someone technical has a dozen more methods.
Plagiarism should be stopped, it's just that this isn't going to do it and it's inconvenienced a lot of people. It's bad judgment.

You and I know this, but when are the masses known to do things that make sense? ;)

I gotta wonder how anyone thought they could plagiarise LOTM. It's not like she's some obscure unknown writer. She's really popular and it would obviously get noticed right away. It's bad enough to be a criminal, but the shame of being a dumb one ;D

Right?! Hello! You know, maybe because her fic was posted elsewhere. But this person was young (she had her picture posted) so maybe she didnt know that LOTM is a well known writer. It was...darn I forget which fic...but we ALL let her know that the author had been emailed so unless she wanted all of her fics pulled down (because then who's to say she didnt copy someone else's work?) that she'd better take it down.

Id do it for all of my writer friends lol I dont care. Right is right and wrong is wrong.

Sounds like the best answer to my question would be "no", then. I hate ff.net anyway, and I think I was probably thinking about doing it for all the wrong reasons. I think my ego will just have to live without it.

Will you hold it against me for being selfish? It's just that I can't get enough of your fics so the more, the merrier. But I wouldn't want anything bad to happen. But you have a bunch of stuff that can still be posted!!

I'm afraid all my posted fics are already at TPP and LiveJournal. 90% of them are at Ashwinder. I just prefer an archive with a bit of integrity. My ego wanted to post stuff at ff.net because it's a bigger audience, but that was the only reason. I need to learn that my ego doesn't always have my best interests at heart. And to be honest, most of my stuff isn't really rated for there - I'd rather post it somewhere I trust.

I realise that posting at ff.net is a wider net, but in truth, I hate it.

What about AO3? It seems up and coming?

I do have some there and really like it. I posted quite a few when they were first up and running, and encountered quite a few errors and bugs. I got a little frustrated with it and stopped posting. Also, I love The Masque, and need to get my stuff posted up there as well. I just prefer these archives to ff.net, which I have zero respect for. As I say, my ego hankered for bigger audiences, but I think in the long run that's not what I really want.

I personally still read mostly on ff.net because it has the most to pull from. I've also been reading AO3 stuff lately. I just think maybe if you were to post at ff.net you would post stuff that follows the guidelines with links in your profile for your other stuff. You know pretty much as advertising for the other sites. Even though I mostly read on ff.net I also go to their profile afterward to see where else they post, and have no problem following the the trail elsewhere. I did that with tychesong to themaplebookshelf.com

I vote with [livejournal.com profile] smallbrownfrog. I do read at ff.net, and I like being able to find out on which archives an author's work can be found is very helpful.

I also vote with SmallBrownFrog. Post just a few and provide links or make mention of where the larger body of your work is. I understand how you are on the fence about it; the quality there is haphazard, and you are judged by the company you keep. Something to keep in mind for when you become a published author. If your future readers found your old stories on ff.net, how would you feel about that?

I'm also voting same as smallbrownfrog and mimimanderly.

Personally I just stopped looking for new stories on ff.net after they started forceing online reading. And blocking downloanding does not prevent anyone with determination to get the story down.

I'm not answering this, as I can't even read on ff.net. Either my OS (Linux) or the size of my screen (netbook) mashes the text up and makes the whole experience intolerable.

But best of luck with your decision!
