Well, I am persistent, if not timely. After thirteen years, I've finally got round to matting and framing a photo we found in a junk shop somewhere in England (it will tell you how long ago it's been as I can recall neither the place nor the date said item was purchased).

I've carried it to at least three different residences, between two different countries and continents, but I never got it properly mounted and framed until this week.

I think it looks really at home in the corner, and the frame was perfect for it. Here is a close up:

Unfortunately, there is no date anywhere on the photo. We think it must have been some kind of block party, perhaps even Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. I'm thinking around the turn of the century, but I can't be sure. Judging from hairstyles and general appearance I don't think it's any later. I'm also not sure where it would have been taken - perhaps the patterned brickwork on the chimney is a clue, but I'm just not sure. All of the British Isles are well represented in the middle (England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales), as well as the military in the background. The three on either end seemed to be part of a group, as do the 'Japanese' contingent in the right foreground (perhaps a Mikado reference?), but we don't know their significance, either.

I also have a soft spot for the solemn looking matron in black, fourth in from the left, back row.

In any case, it looks astonishingly at home in the Steamlib, and I'm actually sort of glad it's taken me over ten years to give it a proper setting. I can at least put hand to heart and say that I did find the perfect one for it.

All this lovely jocularity had us feeling a little homesick for Blighty tonight. We consoled ourselves with this:
