My stepdaughter just came back from artistic ink with her latest tattoo: a blue willow teacup and saucer, with her dad's initials in the middle. It's really pretty. When I asked her if it hurt, she said with absolute conviction, the words I will forever use when Hermione loses her virginity to Severus: "It hurts, but it's a pain I want to feel again and again. I crave it now."

Hmmm.

I have thought long and hard about getting a tattoo for many years. My problem is that 1) I don't know what to put on my body that will still be relevant to me in 30 years' time, and 2) I'm a wimp when it comes to real pain. Spank, paddle and cane me all you like but no needle play, please.

I've thought of getting the words "Inspire" and "Believe", and maybe the name of my muse. If I do, and it's a BIG 'if', that's what I'll do.

I've just seen these on the Warner Brother's Sight. Am I just too sad because I want these for myself?

This is Hermione's and Severus' wands. I'm sorry, is something wrong with me because I think they're beautiful and inspirational? They are available through Warner Brothers, and I can't afford them, but I want them. *Sigh*. That's a sigh of longing, folks, not a sigh of 'darn, I can't afford them'. I didn't want you to think I was trying to feel sorry for myself.

Draw it on yourself with a sharpie, then see how you feel about it. The thing about tattoos is... most women change their eye shadow preference, their hair colors and styles, and their wardrobe choices several times over the course of their lives. And yet they want to get a drawing on their body that will stay with them FOREVER??? What if they get a skull, then they lose interest in being a Goth? What if they get their husband's name... then they divorce? What if they get the word "sexy"... and they just get old and saggy? It's just a little too permanent for my tastes.

lol, I know what you mean. Cat is already talking about having the words on one of her tattoos lasered off because they are lyrics to a song by a band she no longer likes....*sigh* Not the brightest, my stepdaughter.

I would never entertain the idea of a picture. Words, maybe. I've thought of having Dahlra's name done...he seems pretty permanent...

Oh, we both know I'm too much of a wimp to sit quietly while someone shoves a needle in my skin over and over. lol

But Teddy darling... a needle is SUCH a little prick... and you've had such bigger ones! ;)

Mimi darling - you DO make me laugh! I actually do think, though, in this case bigger is not always better.

I gave myself a tattoo for my 30th birthday. I'll be turning 58 in June... ;-)

No words. I wasn't even sure what I wanted when I went to the parlor, wasn't even sure I'd get one that night. But I looked at their wall of available flash, and decided I liked one that was of a rose with a lightening bolt thru it, surrounded by a couple of stars and the crescent moon.

I'm a Cancer born in June, so the rose and moon were appropriate symbols for me, and it wasn't particularly large, perhaps 2.5 inches.

The needle doesn't go in as deep as the ones used for medical procedures; it only goes into the upper layer of the dermis (the layer of skin just under the epidermis).

That's not to say that it doesn't hurt, but the amount of pain varies depending on what area of the body is done. Areas with little muscle/fat under the skin -- the skull, the ankle -- are said to be quite painful. Areas with the most padding -- the tush, for instance -- are the least painful.

I had mine done on my upper right arm. There was pain, but I've had more pain at the dentist having my teeth cleaned. I was fine for the first 25 or so minutes of the procedure, which took about 40 minutes.

What finally started getting to me wasn't the pain, which remained tolerable thru out the procedure; what got to me was the combination of the smell of the ink (since it was being done in relative proximity to my nose), and the SOUND of the needle, the whine of which to me is too much like a dentist's drill.

By the time the tattoo artist finished, I was feeling quite nauseous because of the sound and the smell, but not because of the pain. And once I got outside into the fresh air I was fine.

I probably won't do anything more than writing my favourite words: believe and inspire, but I wouldn't mind having TeddyRadiator either. Or the name of my Muse. But that's all. I don't have any real desire to do anything else.

The tattoo place Cat went was, according to the Hubs, really cool - he said it looked like a realtor's office, but way cooler. I think I'll go there.

Yep, I probably will. I'm feeling the desire to make something permanent. Probably my Muse's name. He's been there forever, so I'll put his name there.

An excellent idea. :)

I've been tempted by the siren call of a tattoo for some time, but have yet to give in. Perhaps we'll both manage to overcome our trepidation in the somewhat-near future?

There are times I think -- yeah, I'm gonna do it! Then other times I'm 'meh'. Then there are times I'm 'what WAS I thinking?'

I think I'll either get my two favourite words, inspire and believe, or either my Muse. He's been around a while, don't think he's going anywhere.

When getting a tattoo, you really have to think it trough. A lot. I wanted a tattoo since I was 14, and when I was 19 I still wanted it. And all that time it was one and only motive: a snake. I had that motive pasted on my wall for 5 years, to see if I can stand it for longer periods of time. And I did. And when I was 19, and earned my money, I went and got myself a tattoo, and I haven't regreted it. It hurt only like someone was lightly pinching me (I have it above my left shoulder blade), and I was watching a comedy trough the whole tattooing time and I was laughing. I'm scared shitless of needles, so I told the tattoo artist to just cover the needles until I'm settled, otherwise he won't be doing anything. And he was great, he really covered all are with paper towels until I sat down and he started inking.

If you really want a tattoo, you just have to think if it will suit you in 10-15 years time, and how that place on your body will be affected trough aging. Maybe I still love my piece because I can't see it every day unless I disrobe and look at it in the mirror. If I had it on my arm, I think I would get pretty tired of it after a while, no matter how great the piece is.

But, your stepdaughter is right. After I got the tattoo, I craved that same pain... but I resisted. Maybe, one day, when I decide on another motive, and watch it every day for 5 years, I will get another one.

Blue, wise words indeed. I think you approached it with great wisdom and insight. If I decide to do it, it will be the words 'inspire' and 'believe' and 'DahlraMuse'. Maybe 'TeddyRadiator' but I don't know!
