For the longest time, I have been wanting to get my hands on some burlap coffee bean sacks. I like using burlap for various things, and I love printed cloth like flour sacks, coffee bags, you name it. There are a few coffee shops around here that get their beans brought in, and they wanted around $8-10 per bag. Being the cheap person I am, I wanted to pay less.
The other day we went to a little hole-in-the-wall antique shop. The guy didn't have much, and what he did have he wanted too much for, and wouldn't negotiate. He did have three coffee sacks. When I asked him how much he wanted, he said, $10 each. I told him the local coffee shop sold theirs for $8, and he promptly said, "Eight then. If you want them all, I'll take $15 for the lot."
I ended up not buying them, and sort of regretted it, but hey, that's the way it goes. Then yesterday I got an email from my local Freecycle, and I thought, "Hmm...I wonder..."
So I put a wanted: coffee bean sacks notice on the Freecycle. Aside from the automatic spam mails one automatically gets on these things, I heard nothing.
Today, Mom called and asked if we could come over; her PC was acting up a bit, so we went over to see if we could help. On the way, we passed something lying by the side of the road, and as one, TheHubs™ and I said, "That looked like a coffee bean sack."
It could not have been in a more inconvient place for us to turn around, but turn around we did. Twice. Finally, I was able to grab it. And lo and behold, it was indeed a coffee bean sack. It is in the washer now on a gentle cycle, and if it survives the required three washings, I'll put it to use.
But I did get a kick out of the fact that I put it out there that I wanted free coffee bean sacks, and one landed at my feet. Ask and ye shall receive.
