Two Things Have Occurred To Me
Oct. 10th, 2014 08:23 pmOne, I haven't posted in forever, and two, I haven't posted a drabble for my own
grangersnape100 prompt. I've been dong several things lately and that ain't one of them. I've also been lurking frequently, but as a person who crusades for more input on LiveJournal, I've been a stone-cold hypocrite and not written much.
This week has been spent mainly working on my mother's bathroom. She lives in a tiny little house built in 1966, and she's decided to get it into good shape in her later years. My gorgeous cousin Jimmy and TheHubs™ did the grunt work while I scoured the internet for good buys on vanity cabinets, toilets, medicine cabinets, mirrors and doors, and I must have driven hundreds of miles on quests for certain items like paint and shower curtains and flooring.
As with any project, nothing goes as smoothly as it should. The guys took up the old flooring to discover that the toilet had been leaking happily unnoticed for probably 20 years or so, and when Jimmy tried to illustrate how bad it was, his hand went through the rotted wood to the crawl-space under the house. What had been predicted to take about two days will take about 8 now. But she now has a new floor, new flooring, lighting, toilet, sink and cabinet, wall and medicine cabinet. About the only thing that isn't being replaced is the tub. All that's left is painting and a few little details and it will be done. We will paint Monday.
The novel continues apace. I am approaching a very hard piece to write and I'm stalling. Oh, well. I have also signed up for
severus_fest, and got the prompt I wanted and think I may be able to do something good with it.
I'm starting to knit again, and I've graduated from the shaker stitch to true knitting and purling, with mixed results. I hope I can make something decent for Christmas, but who can say?
About the most successful thing I'm still doing is eating healthy. TheHubs™ and I have continued our healthy eating regime, and I can tell already a huge difference. I think I've lost around ten pounds (but as big as I am it will be months before any real change will occur). I have tons of energy, I'm walking at a very brisk pace, I have drastically cut my beta blockers down to 1/2 pill per day, and I feel like I'm totally in control of myself for the first time in my life. We've been doing this since mid-August, and it feels so good to know I don't have to make excuses for what I eat or do or feel. I still need to exercise more, but the benefits already are just amazing.
I've been talking to B & K about all this - they have been aggressively eating right and exercising since new years and look astounding. She gave me a meatloaf recipe using ground turkey and italian turkey sausage that has blown me away. It's fantastic, and uses no bread crumbs of any kind, and is scrumptious as meatballs as well. And I've discovered Subway makes amazing chopped salads out of your chosen ingredients, and they are delish.
Other than all that, I'm just plugging along, listening to great music for inspiration and enjoying life. I don't believe MISTI-Con is in the cards for us this year, and I'm at peace with that. Disappointed, but at peace. I am sad I won't be able to see all the wonderful friends, of course, but there's a still, small voice telling me to just accept it, and to be serene about stuff. And with everything else, I'm just going to do my best.
Hugs to all who needs 'em, and although I haven't said much, I do love hearing from you all.

Date: 2014-10-11 01:03 am (UTC)We had the same problem with our toilet, but it was caught before it got that bad. Paul had installed it when we first moved in (how hard can it be?), and he didn't make the pipe connection flush (no pun intended) with the pipe in the floor. Fortunately, a few years ago, we needed a plumber for an unrelated problem. When he went down to our basement crawl space, he saw the wooden flooring under the toilet was damp and told us about it. We had him reset and reseal the base immediately. Thank goodness we caught it in time! Your mom must be thrilled to have a new bathroom!

Date: 2014-10-11 04:37 am (UTC)I hope that your mom's bathroom looks beautiful - with so much care going into it, it's sure to turn out utterly superb.
Way to go on eating healthy!!! I know it's not easy, and let me know if you need any more tips or tricks for food. I've got a killer spaghetti sauce recipe. :) I've lost a lost of weight in the past few years, not just by eating healthy but by changing my habits - with cooking as well as how I eat, etc. It's been slow progress, but it still works and I'm not reverting to bad ways.
I'm glad to hear you've been able to pick up knitting again, and that your novel is going well. (Ah, stalling, how well I know it!)
Best of luck on SeverusFest, Teddy!! ♥

Date: 2014-10-11 09:11 pm (UTC)It sounds like you're doing really well (annoying home improvements aside) and congrats on getting into the groove of a healthier lifestyle. They say it takes about two weeks to establish new habits, so you're past the hump! :)
And yes, lurker mode. I'm there myself. I love LJ and I love interaction but I just can't get off my ass to do any of it at the moment.
You'll come out of hiding when you're ready.
