It's interesting to see the stances taken by France and the US (Wilson) after WWI. The US (Wilson) insisted that decimating Germany would only serve to ruin the country and leave them in terrible state, but France (Clemenceau) wanted Germany to suffer. And in the end, one was right and one was occupied for a large portion of WWII.

I wish the US were led by a Wilson-type figure these days. Honestly, I'd take a toaster oven in the White House over the idiot currently living there.
